In 1981, Hubel and Wiesel received a Nobel Prize for their research on the visual cortex. In their investigations they found that different neurons are sensitive to different patterns projected on a screen in front of cats. One type of cell might fire most rapidly in response to a horizontal line in the lower right part of the visual field, another to a diagonal line in the upper left part of the visual field.
