Assimilation is a process in which minority groups lose their distinctive identities and conform to cultural patterns of the dominant group. Cultural assimilation requires the minority to accept the host group's culture; structural assimilation requires the minority to participate in the dominant group's social organizations; and in marital assimilation the minority is encouraged to marry members of the dominant group. In segregation, the minority group is physically or socially excluded from dominant group activities. This may be by law (de jure) or by custom (de facto). Segregation also takes the form of population transfer, which is the forced expulsion of a minority group from a territory. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic elimination of minority group members. An example of genocide include the mass murder of more than six million Jews by the Nazis in World War II.
