The Answer is According to the gate-control theory,fast-transmitting,large L-fibers carry information about sharp pain and most other types of tactile stimulation to the brain.Once their information is transmitted to the brain,they close the pain gate by inhibiting the firing of neurons with which they synapse.The slower-transmitting S-fibers carry information about dull and burning pain to the brain and also synapse with the same neurons as the L-fibers.This means their pain information may arrive at a closed gate due to the faster operation of the L-fibers.If the gate is closed,the pain information from the S-fibers cannot be sent to the brain.
The pain experienced by amputees in missing limbs can be explained by using gate-control theory.The L-fibers are destroyed when the limb is amputated so the pain gates stay open.This allows random neural stimulation at the site of amputation to trigger the experience of pain in the missing limb;there are no L-fibers to inhibit the S-fibers' pain information from being sent to the brain.
