Before they took the test, they were told that based on their past performance they were expected to score "above average", "about average", or "below average," the level of expected performance being randomly chosen. The subjects scores on the tests were then analyzed using ANOVA. Each gender by encouragement combination had 10 individuals for a total of 60. ​
