Definitions:

Ductus Arteriosus

A fetal blood vessel connecting the pulmonary artery to the aortic arch, allowing most of the blood to bypass the fetus's developing lungs.

Foramen Ovale

An opening in the septum between the two atria of the heart in the fetus, which normally closes soon after birth.

Phrenic Veins

Veins that drain blood from the diaphragm, important for the return of blood to the heart.

Diaphragm

A dome-shaped, muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals, playing a major role in breathing as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.
