A diagnosis of PTSD includes a history of trauma(s) event exposure that impacts the person and leads to avoidance, negative reactions, and changes to daily living. There are four symptom categories: intrusion, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, and alterations in arousal and reactivity. These symptoms must be present for at least one month to be diagnosed as PTS

It can often manifest as jumpiness, nervousness, quick to react, high defensiveness, and/or the inability to feel calm or relax. Most recent estimates find that five percent of adolescents between ages 13 and 18 met criteria for PTSD during their lifetime. It is more prevalent in girls (8.3%) than for boys (2.3%).
