Every now and then, if both starting goalies are injured or otherwise unable to play, an NHL team requires an emergency backup goalie. These goalies are usually not professionals and the rare opportunity to play in a real NHL game could be terrifying, exciting, or a mixture of both. Sometimes they even win (just ask David Ayres, who defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in that very situation!) .
