Even though Alexander Hamilton was a more dominant personality and assertive administrator than Thomas Jefferson, Americans commonly speak of ours as a "Jeffersonian democracy," not a "Hamiltonian republic." Why did the principles and ideals of Jefferson somehow become more deeply ingrained in American political culture and society than Hamilton's? Are Jefferson's ideals still as appealing today, even if his particular policies are no longer adhered to?
