Two-time Super Bowl winner Dave Duerson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach in February 2011. He shot himself in the stomach because he wanted to leave his brain to science. He blamed his post-football troubles, including memory loss, troubles spelling words, depression, and moodiness, on the repeated concussions he suffered while on the playing field. An autopsy of his brain did reveal the same signs of chronic traumatic brain injury that have been found in dozens of other retired NFL players, as well as in athletes from many other violent sports, such as hockey and boxing.
