Chiang Ching-kuo (1910–1988), the son of Chiang Kai-shek, was also a key political figure in Taiwan. He was educated in the Soviet Union and later played a significant role in the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan. Chiang Ching-kuo held various positions, including head of the secret police and defense-related roles, before succeeding his father as the leader of Taiwan. He became the Premier of the Republic of China in 1972 and the President in 1978, following his father's death. His leadership was marked by a continuation of his father's policies initially, but he eventually oversaw a period of political liberalization. In the late 1980s, Chiang Ching-kuo lifted martial law, allowed the formation of opposition parties, and took steps toward democratization.
