However, the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States in 1853 with his "black ships" demanding the opening of Japan to trade led to the eventual downfall of the Tokugawa shogunate. Internal dissatisfaction and the pressure from foreign powers culminated in the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which marked the end of the shogunate and the restoration of imperial rule under Emperor Meiji.
