Genomic Imprinting
Genomic imprinting occurs when genes inherited from one or the other parent are silenced due to methylation. Imprinting can result in offspring who express either the maternal or paternal copy of the gene, but not both.
Transcription Factors
Proteins involved in the process of converting, or transcribing, DNA into RNA, playing a critical role in regulating gene expression.
Silenced Genes
Genes that are not expressed in the phenotype due to mechanisms that prevent their transcription or translation.
Trivers-Willard Hypothesis
A theory suggesting that parents are likely to have offspring of the sex that will give them the greatest number of surviving grandchildren under certain conditions.
