The Answer is Iodine deficiency is particularly problematic in pregnant women since their required intake (250 µg per day) is higher than for non-pregnant women (150 µg per day). Hypothyroidism during gestation is associated with increased risks of abortion, hypertension, anemia, abruptio placentae, and postpartum hemorrhage in the mother and can lead to preterm birth, low birth weight and respiratory distress in the neonate. Several studies have found that children of mothers with mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency may suffer from hearing impairments and neurological deficits.
Surprisingly, most European countries do not iodize their salt supply, and as a consequence, the prevalence of iodine insufficiency among pregnant women is high in these countries, e.g., over 50% in Great Britain and Australia.
