The Answer is The pancreas functions as both an endocrine and an exocrine gland. Specialized endocrine cells of the Islets of Langerhans are instrumental in the secretion of insulin and glucagon to maintain tight control of blood glucose. In contrast, specialized exocrine cells (called acinar cells) secrete powerful digestive enzymes (e.g., trypsin, lipase, and amylase) as well as alkaline fluid into the pancreatic ducts that eventually drain into the main pancreatic duct and the duodenum (upper small intestine). Most pancreatic cancers (approximately 99%) are adenocarcinomas that arise from the epithelial cells that line the ducts of the exocrine pancreas.
