Arguments for:
-Some groups believe moral education will address crime and delinquency statistics and problems with alcohol and drug abuse.
-Theorists such as Piaget suggest morality is developmental and schools can nurture it.
-Students need to be able to enact particular values as individuals and as members of a community.
-Values education is seen to impact on student learning (see five ways in dot points at top of page 279).
-Re-focuses teachers on quality teaching and commitment and care for students.
Arguments against:
-Haven't identified what is meant by a 'morally educated person'.
-No clear idea of how to implement moral education.
-Not clear if focus should be on an ethic of justice or an ethic of care or both.
-Not one way to become fully fledged members of civic society.
