Jeannette Rankin was officially sworn in as a member of 65th Congress on April 2, 1917. One of her first votes was against declaring war on Germany, which marked the United States's entry into World War I. In 1918, she opened debate in the U.S. House of Representatives on a resolution to grant women the right to vote.
