Definitions:

Esophagus

The muscular tube that connects the throat (pharynx) with the stomach; plays a key role in moving swallowed food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach.

Involuntary Control

The regulation of bodily functions not consciously controlled, such as the heartbeat and digestion, governed by the autonomic nervous system.

Voluntary Control

The ability to consciously regulate bodily movements or actions through the nervous system.

Epiglottis

A flap of cartilage at the root of the tongue, which is depressed during swallowing to cover the opening of the windpipe.
