The Answer is America is not as polarized as many people believe. Mass surveys over time indicate that there is no evidence of ideological polarization. Over the last several decades, a strong majority of Americans identify themselves as moderates, somewhere between liberalism and conservatism. Fewer than four in ten Americans call themselves liberal or conservative. This figure has remained fairly constant for decades. Though politics is inherently conflictual by definition because there are always winners and losers when political decisions are made, that does not necessarily mean that Americans are polarized in an ideological manner. By definition, Americans are not as ideological as their counterparts in Europe, where governments tend to have multiple political parties and movements representing several points on an ideological continuum.
