Definitions:

Midbrain

A portion of the central nervous system associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep/wake, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation.

Hypothalamus

A region of the forebrain below the thalamus that coordinates both autonomic nervous system and pituitary, controlling body temperature, thirst, hunger, and other homeostatic systems, and involved in sleep and emotional activity.

Thalamus

A brain structure that acts as a relay station for sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, playing a key role in processing sensory information.

Reticular Formation

A network of neurons located in the brainstem that plays a key role in controlling arousal and alertness.
