Definitions:

Homologous Chromosomes

Chromosomes that are similar in morphology and genetic constitution. In humans there are 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes; one member of each pair is inherited from the mother, and the other from the father.

Synapsis

The process of physical association of homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis.

Anaphase I

A stage of meiosis where homologous chromosomes are separated and move to opposite poles of the cell.

Sister Chromatids

Identical copies of a chromosome, connected by a centromere, that are created during DNA replication and separated during cell division.
