General Adaptation Syndrome
A theoretical model describing the body's response to stress in three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.
Resistance Stage
Third stage of the stress response, when the person attempts to adapt to the stressor. The body stabilizes; hormone levels stabilize; and heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac output return to normal.
Alarm Stage
The initial reaction of the body's stress response, characterized by the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the secretion of stress hormones.
Burnout
A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, usually from the workplace.
