The term "Semitic" was first introduced in the 18th century by German historian August Ludwig von Schlözer, who derived it from Shem, one of the three sons of Noah in the Bible, from whom these people were traditionally considered to be descended. However, the classification is linguistic and not necessarily indicative of a common racial or ethnic origin.

Semitic languages are characterized by a root system in which words are formed from a base set of consonants, usually three, to which different patterns of vowels are applied to create different meanings. For example, in Arabic, the root "k-t-b" is associated with writing; "kataba" means "he wrote," "kitaab" means "book," and "maktab" means "office" or "desk."

Historically, Semitic-speaking peoples have played significant roles in the development of civilization. For instance, ancient Mesopotamian cultures such as the Akkadians and Babylonians spoke Semitic languages, as did the Phoenicians, who were renowned for their seafaring and trade. The Hebrews, who spoke Hebrew, are central to the religious and cultural history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Today, the most widely spoken Semitic language is Arabic, which is the liturgical language of Islam and an official language in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Hebrew is the official language of Israel and has been revived as a spoken language after centuries of being used primarily for liturgical and literary purposes. Other Semitic languages are spoken by millions of people across the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
