The Answer is Some of the basic reflexes can be grouped as avoidance or approach reflexes.Among the avoidance reflexes are coughing,sneezing,and blinking.Among the approach reflexes are rooting (turning the head toward gentle stroking),sucking,and swallowing.There are also other reflexes,such as the Moro reflex (a tendency to swing the arms wide and then cross them over the body when hearing a loud sound or suffering a loss of support),and the Palmer grasp reflex (tightening the grip if whatever is being held is raised).As babies develop,some of these reflexes are lost.It is thought that they are inhibited by the emergence of higher cortical functions,which develop later.The Moro reflex and the Palmer grasp reflex may be indicators of our earlier primate nature,in that they would have been helpful to creatures hanging on to their parents,much as other primates hang on to theirs,both for support and contact comfort.The approach reflexes are all involved in feeding,and so may be another indicator of our adaptability.
