Definitions:

Defense Mechanisms

Psychological strategies brought into play by the unconscious mind to manipulate, deny, or distort reality in order to defend against feelings of anxiety and unacceptable impulses.

Unconscious Level

Mental processes that occur without conscious awareness or control.

Conscious Level

The degree of awareness an individual has about their surroundings, thoughts, feelings, and sensations at any given time.

Preconscious Level

Part of the mind that contains thoughts and feelings not currently in consciousness but can be readily brought to consciousness.
