DNA

Deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecule that carries the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses.

Mitosis

The form of cell division in which each chromosome splits lengthwise to double in number. Half of each chromosome combines with chemicals to retake its original form and then moves to the new cell.

A set of rules used by living cells to translate information encoded within genetic material (DNA or mRNA sequences) into proteins.

Thread-like structures located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cells that carry genes made of DNA.
