Individuals with a genetic polymorphism in the Fc receptor, Fc RIIa (CD32) , have an increased susceptibility to bacterial meningitis (inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord) caused by the encapsulated bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis.
