In order to understand how to address the problem, the city of Albuquerque wanted to more fully understand the illegal opioid drug culture. To that end, the researchers conducted semistructured interviews in person or by phone with substance abuse treatment facility patients and administrators, healthcare employees, and advocacy groups in the Albuquerque area. Each interview lasted from 20 to 60 minutes and was recorded for transcription; common themes were then assessed.
