Comma Splices Are a Common Occurrence

question 11

Short Answer

Comma splices are a common occurrence. They happen when a comma without the use of a coordinating conjunction joins two independent clauses (sentences) together. There are three ways to fix a comma splice. You may add a coordinating conjunction after the comma, use a semi-colon instead of the comma, or begin a new sentence. Determine whether the sentences below have a comma splice. If they do, correct them using whichever method (of the three discussed above) seems most appropriate.
1. John went to the meeting, he came back with a large stack of documents to sort through.
2. Everyone met their quota for the week, so the owner threw a party!
3. I attended the conference with a co-worker, he was sick the entire time.
