Comma splices are a common occurrence. They happen when a comma without the use of a coordinating conjunction joins two independent clauses (sentences) together. There are three ways to fix a comma splice. You may add a coordinating conjunction after the comma, use a semi-colon instead of the comma, or begin a new sentence. Determine whether the sentences below have a comma splice. If they do, correct them using whichever method (of the three discussed above) seems most appropriate.
1. John went to the meeting, he came back with a large stack of documents to sort through.
2. Everyone met their quota for the week, so the owner threw a party!
3. I attended the conference with a co-worker, he was sick the entire time.
4. I will have the deliverable on your desk by noon, I have to get the spreadsheet finished after that.
5. That chart seems out of place in the presentation, and I would like for you to remove it.
6. The usability testing is complete, we are going to analyze the results now.
7. She loved to read, but she always struggled with grammar.
8. I did receive your email, I haven't had time to answer.
9. The CEO just announced that she is going to retire at the end of this year, I wonder who will replace her.
