Definitions:

Doula

A woman who helps with the birth process. Traditionally in Latin America, a doula was the only professional who attended childbirth. Now doulas are likely to arrive at the woman’s home during early labor and later work alongside a hospital’s staff.

Apgar Scale

A quick test performed on a newborn at 1 and 5 minutes after birth to assess the baby's heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, reflexes, and skin color.

Reflex Irritability

An involuntary response to a stimulus which could indicate the health of the nervous system, often assessed in newborns and infants.

Muscle Tone

The continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles, or the muscle's resistance to passive stretch during resting state, helping to maintain posture.
