When light hits the retina, the retinal (the aldehyde form of vitamin A) stored in the retina causes a change in the rod cells, which allows us to see black and white images. The cone cells of the retina, which are only effective in bright light, use retinal to interpret different wavelengths of light as different colours.
Vitamin A deficiency causes a disorder called night blindness, where the eyes can't adjust to dim light and vision is not quickly restored after bright flashes of light. Colour blindness can also result from vitamin A deficiency. If vitamin A deficiency progresses, it can result in irreversible blindness due to a hardening of the cornea. The epithelial cells of the cornea stop producing mucus and the cornea becomes dry and susceptible to damage, infection, and hardening. Once the cornea hardens, the resulting blindness is irreversible.
