The Answer is The 1527 Sack of Rome was a catastrophic event that occurred on May 6, 1527, when an army of mutinous troops of the Holy Roman Empire, largely composed of German Landsknechte mercenaries as well as Spanish and Italian soldiers, invaded and pillaged the city of Rome. This army was originally gathered by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to march against the Republic of Florence. However, due to the unpaid wages and the leadership's loss of control, the troops diverted to Rome, which was then the center of the Catholic Church and the Papal States.
