Anchieta was one of the founding figures of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and was instrumental in the education and conversion of the indigenous peoples of Brazil.

Anchieta is known for his extensive missionary work, which included the founding of schools and colleges, as well as his efforts in protecting the indigenous population from slavery.
