The Answer is José de San Martín was an Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern part of South America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. Born on February 25, 1778, in Yapeyú, in what is now Argentina, he was a key figure in the history of Latin America.

After a career in the Spanish Army, San Martín became involved in the independence movements of Argentina and Chile, and later Peru. He is best known for his role in the liberation of Argentina from Spanish rule, a process that began in 1812 when he created the Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers (Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo).

San Martín's most notable military achievement was perhaps the crossing of the Andes from Argentina to Chile in 1817, leading an army to victory against the Spanish in order to liberate Chile. This was a remarkable feat given the harsh conditions and the difficult terrain of the Andes mountain range.

After helping to secure Chilean independence, San Martín met with fellow liberator Simón Bolívar at the Guayaquil Conference in 1822 to discuss the future of Latin American independence efforts. San Martín then went on to liberate Peru, declaring its independence in 1821, and became the Protector of Peru for a short period.

Despite his significant role in the independence movements, San Martín's later years were spent in exile in Europe. He died on August 17, 1850, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Today, José de San Martín is remembered as a national hero in Argentina and other parts of Latin America, with numerous statues, streets, and plazas bearing his name across the continent.
