The Answer is ​ A continuous flight auger is like a large drill bit that can form a bored pile ranging from 20 to 48 in diameter. The pile is drilled to the specified depth in one continuous process. While the auger is drilled into the ground, the flights of the auger are filled with soil, which provides lateral support and maintains the stability of the hole. At the same time the auger is withdrawn from the hole, concrete or grout is placed by pumping the concrete/grout mix through the hollow center of the auger pipe to the base. Once the excavation is complete, reinforcement is placed into the fluid and the hole filled with concrete to complete the pile. For successful operation of a rotary auger, the soil must be reasonably free of tree roots, cobbles, and boulders, and it must be self-supporting. When boulders or decomposed rock is encountered, the auger head can be fitted with a cutting bit to aid in drilling.
