The Answer is The 2013 guidelines for statin recommendations include the following:
patients with clinically evident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease;
patients with primary LDL levels of 190 mg/dL or higher;
patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and LDL of 70 mg/dL or higher in patients aged 40 to 75; and
patients with a 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease of 7.5% or higher using the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Calculator (ACDRC), and an LDL of 70 mg/dL or higher, in patients aged 40 to 75 years.
It is the fourth subgroup that increased the number of American adults recommended for statins-those with risk factors but without evidence of cardiovascular disease. This was the first time this category of individuals has been included in cholesterol guidelines.
