The Answer is Cancer of the thyroid afflicts 3-4 times more women than men. During 2018, 567,233 new cases were diagnosed in the world population, and 41,071 people died from thyroid cancer. Of these, 436,344 cases (77%) and 25,514 deaths (62%) occurred in women. The age-adjusted incidence rate in women was triple the rate in men (10.2 per 100,000 versus 3.1 per 100,000), whereas the mortality rates were similar (0.5 per 100,000 in women and 0.4 per 100,000 in men).
During 2000-2018, the annual number of incident cases of thyroid cancer detected in the world population increased more than fourfold, whereas the number of deaths changed relatively little. Age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates actually show inverse trends. During 2002-2018, the incidence more than tripled among women (3.3 versus 10.2 per 100,000), whereas the mortality declined by 38% (0.8 versus 0.5 per 100,000). The inverse trends of incidence and mortality may largely reflect the increased early detection of small papillary thyroid tumors that were treated by complete surgical resection.
