The Answer is The INTERSTROKE Study is a standardized case-control study involving 22 countries worldwide. The investigation compared 2,337 cases with acute stroke to 3,000 controls without stroke that were matched to the cases by age and gender. Collectively, ten risk factors accounted for almost 90% of the population attributable risk for acute stroke in the INTERSTROKE Study. The strongest risk factor was hypertension (odds ratio = 2.6); nevertheless, several other factors including smoking, abdominal obesity (measured by high waist to hip ratio), hyperlipidemia (measured by high ApoB/ApoA1 ratio), a dietary risk score, and alcohol abuse were also significant risk factors for both ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.
