French New Wave
Took shape in the late 1950s when a group of French film critics writing for the magazine Cahiers du cinéma turned to filmmaking, after the neorealist director Roberto Rossellini advised them to stop writing about films and start making them. Key directors of the French New Wave include Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Louis Malle, Claude Chabrol, Éric Rohmer, Alain Resnais, Jacques Rivette, and Agnes Varda. Many important American filmmakers in the 1960s and 1970s were influenced by the French New Wave filmmakers.
